Practical guide

Toll-free numbers

A toll-free number lets your customers call you without paying long distance, with the charges covered by the recipient.

Why use a toll-free number?

  • • A professional, national image for your business.
  • • Easier to remember, especially with a distinctive number.
  • • Reachable by customers in many cities without multiplying local numbers.
  • • Works like any other inbound number once activated.

North America: toll-free prefixes

North American toll-free numbers use prefixes such as 1-800, 1-833, 1-844, 1-855, 1-866, 1-877 and 1-888.

The most memorable 1-800 combinations are often scarce. In practice, it is usually easier to get a relevant number in newer prefixes like 1-833 or 1-844.

Realistic options for getting a number

1) Port an existing number

If you already have a toll-free number with another carrier, porting it over is often the simplest option.

2) Choose a newer prefix

If the 1-800 number you want is taken, try 1-833, 1-844 or 1-855 with name or brand variations.

3) Standard number without a vanity word

A "regular" toll-free number can often be activated quickly and remains an excellent business option.

4) Wait for new prefixes

New toll-free prefixes appear periodically; the best numbers are usually reserved very quickly.

Important practical considerations

  • • If your customer base is local, a local number can sometimes be more relevant and less expensive than a national toll-free number.
  • • For outbound caller ID, a local number may inspire more trust than an unfamiliar non-geographic number.
  • • Some call origins can carry higher costs (remote areas, territories, etc.).
  • • International calls to North American toll-free numbers are generally not guaranteed and are not always free.
  • • Confirm your coverage area from the start (Canada only, Canada + United States, etc.) to avoid unnecessary charges.
  • • Wait a few days before printing your number widely: this helps you catch any misdirected calls.

Launch tip

If you receive many misdirected calls after activation, consider a greeting or voice menu (IVR) that clearly announces your business before routing the call to an agent.

This reduces interruptions and improves the experience for genuine callers.
